Lasik & Presbyond

What is Lasik?

LASIK stands for Laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis.  It is a procedure that corrects certain vision problems, reducing or eliminating the need for eye glasses or corrective lenses. In LASIK the shape of the cornea is altered using excimer laser that removes tissues with precision of up to a micron level. This is the most common type of refractive surgery. The desired result of LASIK eye surgery is to bend (refract) light rays to focus more precisely on your retina rather than at some point beyond or short of your retina. The goal of LASIK eye surgery is to produce clearer, sharper vision.

Nu Vision Laser Centre in Poona Eye Care is one of the few centres in Pune to offer Lasik treatment with Presbyond to correct all types of refractive errors (freedom from all types of eye glasses and contact lenses including reading glasses, which usually develop around the age of 40). We have the world’s fastest LASIK machine with very high quality outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which vision problems are treated by Lasik procedure?

LASIK eye surgery treats the following vision problems:

Nearsightedness (myopia):

When your eyeball is slightly longer than normal or when the cornea curves too sharply, light rays focus in front of the retina and blur distant vision. You can see objects that are close more clearly, but not those that are far away.

Farsightedness (hypermetropia):

When you have a shorter than average eyeball or a cornea that is too flat, light focuses behind the retina instead of on it. This makes near vision and sometimes distant vision blurry.

Astigmatism:

When the cornea curves or flattens unevenly, the result is astigmatism, which disrupts focus of near and distant vision.

Who is eligible for LASIK?

Above 18 years of age

Absence of any autoimmune disorder

Absence of eye infection

Absence of eye injuries

Not pregnant

Not nursing

Has stable vision for at least a year and a healthy cornea.

Has appropriate cornea thickness

How does LASIK work?

The eye is numbed with drops and gently held open so the patient will not blink or move.

A little corneal flap is made in the outer layer of the eye, with a microkeratome blade (standard LASIK) or a laser beam. At Poona Eye care’s Nu Vision Laser Centre, we have the world’s fastest laser machine for Lasik.

A powerful and extremely precise excimer laser’s cool beam carefully reshapes the ‘stroma’ or center of the cornea within only a few minutes.

The corneal flap is lightly replaced and starts to heal immediately.

The eyes may feel dry and irritated that day as the healing process begins. We provide special drops to keep the eye moist and comfortable.

What precautions should be taken before LASIK surgery?

You are required to stop wearing contact lenses prior to the surgery.

You can take your regular medications after consulting your doctor.

No perfume, earrings or any make-up on the day of surgery.

Eat a light breakfast or lunch.

Wear loose comfortable clothing.

You must be accompanied by a responsible adult on the day of surgery.

What is presbyond ?

Presbyond laser blended vision from Carl Zeiss is an advanced treatment for people who have age-related loss of accommodation (reading power)- ie. reading glasses which develop around or after the age of 40.

As we age the natural lens inside our eye loses its flexibility, resulting in loss of the ability for near focusing.  Primarily the treatment is for a condition called Presbyopia – the loss of the eye’s ability to alter its focus from distant to near objects.

Presbyond improves your vision for reading a book or driving a car, reducing or eliminating the need for glasses. The procedure is almost identical to LASIK; it is painless, although a feeling of pressure on the eyes may be noticed at times. Typically it takes 5 to 10 minutes for the entire procedure. After the procedure you will be taken to your room to rest and the surgeon will check your eyes before you can go home. Most patients will see clearly by the following day.

At Poona Eye Care, we advise a follow up checkup within the first 24-48 hours following the procedure to check on your progress. Your treating eye surgeon will conduct this check up. You will also have regular check ups for 6 months.

What conditions are treated by Presbyond?
