Laser eye procedure is an umbrella term for several eye procedures used to correct refractive errors (i.e., how your eye focuses light). The most common types of laser eye procedure include LASIK, Presbyond, LASEK and EpiLASIK.
Each of the four laser eye procedures below uses the same special laser, called an “excimer” laser, to reshape the cornea. This is what corrects vision. But laser eye procedure can vary in the specifics of the procedure, the recovery time, which surgical instruments are used and patient condition.
The laser is an instrument that produces a pure, high-intensity beam of light energy. The laser light can be precisely focused onto the retina (the light sensing tissue at the back of the eye), selectively treating the desired area while leaving the surrounding tissues untouched. The absorbed energy creates a microscopic spot to destroy lesions or weld tissues together. Laser procedure is usually painless while you remain awake and comfortable. Laser treatment can often preserve vision or prevent vision loss if given in a timely fashion.
Nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism and presbyopia are treatable with Lasik laser treatment.
Also retinal laser procedure is performed as a treatment for a variety of retinal problems including central serous retinopathy, diabetic retinopathy, ocular histoplasmosis, retinal arterial macroaneurysms, retinal vein occlusions, and retinal breaks.
There are four main advantages to getting eye laser treatment:
Your quality of life improves with LASIK as you no longer need to wear contact lenses or glasses. You have a higher risk of catching a contact lens related infection by wearing contact lenses than what you may be exposed to due to a procedure.
Laser eye procedures have proven to be safe. However, like any other medical treatment, it is important to choose an experienced and qualified surgeon.
Laser procedures are quick and generally painless. The laser is computer guided, making it precise and results accurate. The recovery time is smaller than that of conventional procedures.
After laser eye procedure, take these special precautions to prevent injury or infection during your initial postoperative period.
Don’t take a shower or wash your hair until the day after laser eye procedure.
Avoid getting soap in your eye when bathing and washing your hair for at least 1 week after laser eye procedure. Avoid getting products such as hair spray and shaving lotion in your eyes while healing from laser eye procedure.
Avoid rubbing your eyes for the first week after laser eye procedure.
Wear the eye shield/goggles that you received in your postoperative kit when you are sleeping for the first 3 nights after laser eye procedure.
Don’t allow tap water to get in your eyes for at least a week after laser eye procedure.
No swimming for at least 10 days after laser eye procedure.
No eye makeup for at least 1 week after laser eye procedure.
Don’t get your hair colored or permed for at least 10 days after laser eye procedure.
No exercise for 2 days after laser eye procedure.
Wear eye protection for at least the first month once you have resumed exercise and sports activities after laser eye procedure.
Bright sunshine may cause scarring, and therefore, sunglasses are recommended on bright days over a period of 12 months after laser eye procedure.
If you experience pain, a sudden decrease in vision, red eye(s), or discharge from your eye(s), contact your eye doctor immediately.
You should be atleast 18 years old for Lasik laser eye procedure to treat moderate to severe nearsightedness, with or without astigmatism, or mild to moderate farsightedness, also with or without astigmatism. Other laser procedures should be performed only on medical advice as treatment of a serious eye condition.
